At WEmpower, every support worker brings a unique story, passion, and purpose to their role. For Skye, one of our dedicated Central Coast team members, that purpose comes from a deeply personal connection to dementia care - and a genuine love for creating joy and comfort in the lives of the people she supports.

What inspired you to become a support worker with WEmpower?
I was inspired to join WEmpower because dementia is something very close to my heart. I’ve worked with clients who have high-needs dementia before and found it incredibly rewarding. My grandmother also lived with the disease, so I’ve seen firsthand how important it is for people to have compassionate, consistent support.
Being part of a Supported Independent Living (SIL) home dedicated to providing a safe, positive, and engaging environment for the participants really drew me to this role. I wanted to contribute to a place where participants feel valued, understood, and supported every single day.

What does a “day in the life” look like when supporting participants?
No two days are ever the same at WEmpower - and that’s one of the things I love most. I usually work the afternoon shift, which is full of interaction, laughter, and those small, meaningful moments of connection.
We often start with afternoon tea together at the table, which is a great time to chat and share stories. Even though some of the participants are non-verbal, I always make sure they’re included - through gestures, smiles, or simply being part of the group energy.
Music is a big part of our routine too. We’ll have singalongs that fill the house with laughter and light. Throughout the afternoon, I support the participants with their daily activities, ensuring they’re comfortable, engaged, and happy. Our SIL team works closely together to make sure everything runs smoothly - we all focus on creating a calm, fun, and empowering environment where each person can thrive.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The relationships I build with the participants are what I love most. Learning their personalities, routines, and preferences helps me understand what makes them happy. Each person has such a unique way of engaging with the world, and getting to know them on that level is incredibly special.
It’s the small moments - a shared laugh, a gentle smile, a spark of recognition - that make this role so fulfilling. I also really value being part of a SIL team that genuinely cares about both participants and each other.

How do you feel your support helps participants reach their goals?
My role is about helping each person feel safe, understood, and encouraged to take part in everyday life. By learning about their individual needs and preferences, I can support them in building confidence, independence, and a sense of achievement.
Sometimes, it’s the smallest things - encouraging someone to join an activity, or helping them feel included - that have the biggest impact on their wellbeing.

What do you love about being part of the Central Coast WEmpower team?
Coming to work at WEmpower isn’t just a job - it’s an opportunity to make a difference, share laughter, and be part of something meaningful. Our team works together to make sure the participants' needs are met with care, consistency, and compassion.
At the end of the day, knowing that our combined efforts contribute to the participants’ happiness and quality of life is incredibly rewarding. Being part of the Central Coast WEmpower team truly feels like being part of a family.
