Navigating the NDIS can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to understanding the different types of supports available. One of the most common categories in an NDIS plan is Core Supports. But what does this really mean, and how can Core Supports help you or someone you support?
At WEmpower, we’re here to break it down in simple terms so you can get the most out of your plan.

What Are Core Supports?
Core Supports are the day-to-day supports funded under the NDIS to help participants with everyday activities, build independence, and take part in their community.
They are designed to be flexible - meaning you can usually move funding between Core Supports (unless stated otherwise in your plan).

The Four Categories of Core Supports
Assistance with Daily Living
Help with personal care tasks such as showering, dressing, and eating.
Household tasks like cleaning, laundry, and meal preparation.
Support with shopping, attending appointments, or running errands.
Assistance with Social & Community Participation
Support to attend social groups, community events, or classes.
Building social skills and confidence through activities.
Transport support to get you where you need to be.
Consumables
Everyday items related to disability needs.
Examples: continence aids, low-cost equipment, or feeding supplies.
Transport
Support to travel independently or with assistance.
Funding may be available for taxis, rideshares, or community transport if you can’t use public transport because of your disability.
Why Are Core Supports Important?
Core Supports are often the foundation of an NDIS plan. They:
Help you manage daily life with dignity and independence.
Allow more participation in your community and social life.
Provide flexibility to adapt your plan as your needs change.
Support carers and families by reducing pressure at home.

Real-Life Examples of Core Supports in Action
A support worker helps a participant cook healthy meals twice a week.
Funding covers transport so a participant can attend a local art class.
A young person moves into Supported Independent Living (SIL) and receives daily living support with cooking, cleaning, and personal care.
Consumables like continence products are funded, making day-to-day life easier.
