One of the most important parts of living a full and happy life is being connected, to people, places, and experiences. For people with disability, the NDIS can help make this possible through Community Access supports.

Community Access is about more than simply “going out.” It’s about having the right support to take part in everyday life, learn new skills, and build confidence in the community.

What is NDIS Community Access?

Community Access (sometimes called Social & Community Participation) is funding in your NDIS plan that helps you:

  • Join in activities you enjoy

  • Spend time in your community

  • Build skills that support independence

  • Connect with others and make friends

It’s flexible and tailored to you. For some, it might mean support to get to appointments, while for others it’s about joining social groups, learning to travel independently, or getting active through sport.

What Does Community Access Look Like?

Community Access looks different for every person, depending on their goals. It might include:

  • Going to the gym, sporting events, or fitness classes

  • Visiting the shops, library, or local attractions

  • Attending appointments or therapy with support

  • Joining a hobby or social group

  • Learning to use public transport safely

  • Volunteering or exploring work pathways

  • Spending time with friends and building social skills

How Can It Help Build Independence?

Community Access is designed to support you in living the life you choose. With the right support, you can:

  • Learn new skills like handling money, catching the bus, or cooking a meal.

  • Build confidence by trying new things in safe, supported ways.

  • Stay connected and reduce isolation by being part of your community.

  • Stay healthy and active through exercise and outdoor activities.

  • Work towards bigger goals such as preparing for work, moving towards independent living, or just enjoying more freedom.

Who Can Access It?

If you have NDIS funding for Assistance with Social & Community Participation, you can usually use it for Community Access supports. If you’re unsure, a Support Coordinator, Local Area Coordinator, or your provider can help you work out what’s included in your plan.
